*SUMMARY OF THE MEETING BETWEEN THE SUG SENATE AND THE UNIVERSITY ADMINSTRATION, HELD ON THE 5TH OF JUNE, 2017, AT THE CONFERENCE ROOM OF THE ADMINISTRATIVE BLOCK, UNN.*
Greetings Great Lions and Lionesses!
In a bid to enhance the care and Welfare of all Students, the Senate House (as led by *Dist. Sen. Asogwa, Izuchukwu* and *Dist. Sen. Ewa, Timothy Obinna) had an exhaustive dialogue with the University Administration with Prof. B. C. Ozumba(Represented by the D.V.C. Admin.) Prof. C. A. Igwe, Prof. J.C. Ogbonna, Barr. C.C. Igbokwe, Prof. C.N. Ezeani, Prof. Uju, Omo amongst many others.
An Opening address was given by the Senate President, *Dist. Sen. Asogwa, Izuchukwu*. The Senate President thanked the school for providing a conducive environment for proper dialogue after which he presented some student issues to the Administration.
In addition, to the presentation of the Senate President, the Deputy Senate President; *Dist. Sen. Ewa, Timothy,* presented and gave a little elaboration on other challenges facing the students in the University Community. Thereafter, the Administration as led by the DVC Admin. Prof. C. A. Igwe, began to look at the issues item by item. The issues include;
1. REHABILITATION OF THE MAIN ROAD OF UNEC ENTRY POINT (GATE)
The administration expressed their empathy for the dilapidated road, but according to the DVC, the rehabilitation of that road is on the priority list of projects to be done by the school, the only constraint is finance. He assured that the road would be rehabilitated once funds come.
2. FIXING OF AUDIOVISUAL AIDS IN LECTURE THEATRES.
The Administration deliberated on the fixing of Audiovisual aids such as projectors in lecture theatres, they saw this as an effective way of advancing optimal learning and performance in the University. Consequently, the Administration promised to look carefully into this issue.
3. STOCKING OF VETERINARY TEACHING FARM AND OTHER FACULTY WORK AREAS.
The Administration expressed deep concern, about the State of the Faculty of Veterinary medicine and other faculties in the University. The DVC Admin. Notified the Senate that the University is doing all it can to ensure that all its faculties have adequate facilities, however funding remains a major constraint. He also informed the House that some of the projects like the re-stocking of the University Library are been handled by philanthropists and well-meaning individuals in the society. Consequently the administration promised to look into the state of its faculties and seek to improve their standards even if it amounts to external sourcing of funds.
4. EXTENSION OF THE TIME AT WHICH HOSTELS ARE LOCKED.
In order to ensure optimal levels of studies by students staying in the hostels the Senate appealed to the Administration to consider extending the time at which hostels are locked. This appeal was borne out of the fact that most hostels are too noisy and uncondusive for in-depth study, thus decreasing student overall performance.
In response to this the Prof C.A. Igwe expressed how surprised he was that hostels were locked by 9:00PM and even said that was the first time he heard it.However, he said that even if that is the case, the University may have thought it wise to lock the hostels by 9PM for security reasons.
Nevertheless, the Administration assured the Senate that it would consider extending the time at which these hostels are locked, provided that Lions and Lionesses behave themselves in a dignified manner.
5. IMPROVED MAINTENANCE OF HOSTELS
The Senate called the attention of the University Administration to the poor state of the hostels especially the toilets of hostels and appealed that the Administration improves the maintenance of hostels.
In response to the plea, the Administration informed the Senate, that most of the problems in the hostels were caused and aggravated by students. It drew the attention of the Senate to the Male hostels where males pour water indiscriminately(even on cleaners), excrete on the floor of toilets, dump plates with food on the ground where they rot and decay and other unhealthy practices. It also expressed deep displeasure over the Female hostels, that had their toilets repaired few months ago, but currently it is in a very messy state.
The Administration pointed that it knows that it's her function to maintain hostels but if Students do not change their philosophy and lifestyle towards proper hygiene then the hostels would not get any better. The Administration therefore appeals to all Students staying in Hostels to practice standard and healthy practices, even as it would partner with the Dean of Students in order to improve the maintenance of Hostels.
6. EXTENSION OF COURSE REGISTRATION PERIOD.
Regarding this issue, the Administration said that it would not change its procedures For course registration. It notifies all students to register their courses as at when due, but if any Faculty has a particular /peculiar problem it should meet its Dean, for quick rectification.
7. INSTALLMENT OF STREET LIGHTS ON THE STREETS OF THE UNIVERSITY.
The Senate drew the attention of the Administration on how dark, horrible and terrifying the school looks like at night, Especially on the streets of the Medical Centre, Nkrumah, Alvan and other streets.
The Administration expressed great shock on hearing this as it says it repaired the lights of these places some time ago. Consequently the Administration noted and promised to get to the root of this problem as soon as possible.
The Panel discussed other issues and the Administration noted all the appeals made by the Senate to it and promised to work diligently to see to the granting of most of the appeals as soon as possible.
The Dialogue ended with a closing remark by Prof. Uju, Omo, the Dean of the Students affairs who acknowledged that it is truly a time for the University to retreat and work on enhancing the Care and Welfare of Students.
The Senate heartily thanks the University Administration as led by the Vice Chancellor Prof. B.C. Ozumba and his indefatigable team, for providing an avenue for proper dialogue and sound reasoning among herself and her students.
